Event brings classic cars, fashion and music to Hillcrest

Embark on a magical journey into yesteryear at Camp Orchards, embracing the eras of vintage and classic motorcycles and cars, extraordinary fashion by top fashion designers, while being enthralled by the tantalising sounds of the KZN philharmonic orchestra.

VINTAGE cars, classic motorcycles, vintage fashion and live music will come together at Camp Orchards in Hillcrest on Sunday, August 30.

Hosted by Camp Orchards and presented by VVV in association with MUA, the Vintage, Vogue & Velocity event will take visitors on a journey through the decades, combining a classic motor car and motorcycle show with vintage-inspired fashion, live orchestral music and jazz.

The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra will provide the musical centrepiece, performing a journey through the music of the 1920s to the 1980s, while Durban jazz favourites BeatRoute will bring a more intimate sound to the day.

One of the organisers, Karen Monk Klijnstra, said her passion for preservation began at home, where her parents were deeply involved in historical societies and vintage and veteran motoring clubs.

“It became part of my DNA. I have a great love of vintage fashion, music and the arts, and wanted to bring all of these passions together in a spectacular celebration of Durban’s best.”

She said the aim was also to create an event that was accessible to everyone, rather than an exclusive gathering for collectors and enthusiasts.

“We wanted a car and motorcycle show that was open to all, non-elitist and welcoming, bringing together young and old, communities and families in the magnificent grounds of Camp Orchards,” she said.

The programme will explore the distinctive character of each era, from the elegance of the Roaring Twenties and pre-war glamour of the 1930s to the tailored styles of the 1940s, the rock ’n roll spirit of the 1950s and the psychedelic fashions of the 1960s.

The 1970s and 1980s will also feature, with visitors encouraged to embrace everything from bell bottoms and platforms to the bold, edgy styles of the early supercar and sportbike era.

“A Decades Runway will combine vintage cars, motorcycles and fashion in a themed salon-style show. Visitors are encouraged to dress in the style of their favourite era, with prizes on offer for the best-dressed guests,” said Monk Klijnstra, a proudly South African fashion designer with more than 30 years of experience.

Princess Mtolo will be among the models that will showcase fashion at the Vintage, Vogue & Velocity event.

Food and refreshments will be available throughout the day, with themed picnic baskets also available from Camp Orchards for those wanting to make a family day of the occasion.

Organisers are inviting owners of classic cars and motorcycles to register their vehicles for display, while the public are encouraged to book tickets in advance.

Vintage, Vogue & Velocity takes place on Sunday, August 30, from 10:00 to 15:00 at Camp Orchards, Inanda Road, Hillcrest. Tickets cost R150 per person, with pensioners paying R100 and children U12 entering for free.

Booking is essential through Quicket.

Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites.
