Bringing hope through education
Adrian Brits of the Neema Foundation raised R65 000 through the Comrades Marathon.

THE Neema Foundation is grateful to one of their board of trustees members who brought them closer to their goal while he participated in the Comrades Marathon. The foundation is a Kloof-based organisation that works to bring hope through education.
Lorryn Töllner of Neema said their aim is to improve statistics and work towards giving young people a brighter future.

“The statistics from the recent PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) reveal that 81 percent of Grade Four learners in South Africa cannot read for meaning. Our mission is to make a lifetime of difference in the lives of children and adults alike in our community, through our foundational reading and spelling programme, Gateway into Reading. We are currently training 30 teachers in the use of the programme and printing and preparing lessons for 1 500 children each week. We are also partnering with schools in the KwaNyuswa Valley, Phoenix, Verulam, Claremont and uMlazi,” she said.
With Adrian Birt successfully completing the Comrades Marathon, with the intention to raise funds and raise awareness of their foundation, the Neema Foundation has raised R65 000. Their goal is to raise R250 000 with the campaign running until the end of August.

Their focus in the Upper Highway community is to develop children’s reading skills, extending from whole-class teaching during the mornings to one-on-one lessons in the afternoons.
“These children are being gifted with the tools and skills to become independent readers. This is the future generation of leaders in our community,” said Töllner.
The community is invited to support the organisation through this initiative. Lorryn can be contacted at lorryn@neemafoundation.co.za, and more information can be obtained on their website: www.neemafoundation.co.za.
