Park rejuvination project takes shape

Central Park in Hillary sees transformation.

EVER since the Mount Vernon Delta’s, a local neighbourhood watch (NHW) group which is in partnership with the Bellair CPF, took over Central Park in Hillary, the green space has been transformed.

Once the site of illegal dumping and overgrown bushes, Victoria Park as it used to be known, was also a hotspot of criminal activity.

However, thanks to the Delta’s, the space has been cleaned up, graded to create a tiered system and now a retaining wall is being installed.

Public relations officer of the Delta’s, Rabin Singh, explained the upgrade and rejuvenation of the park was an ongoing project.

“Ultimately, we want to bring the community back here. We want to let them know this park is for their families to have a picnic or a braai. So far, we’ve held fundraisers such as fun walks, breyani sales and the like to assist with our upliftment efforts of the Park, and we have much more in store in the near future,” he said.

“We also don’t have too many green spaces left in Hillary so preserving this space is of the utmost importance. The latest part of our project is installing a retaining wall and finalising the parking area for residents to use. We are also grateful to have the support of local residents and our partners and stakeholders. We envision this park being a central point that is a safe, recreational space,” added Singh.
