Learners benefit from shoe campaign

Transnet launched their 'Step into Generosity' campaign, benefiting learners from several schools in Hammersdale.

TRANSNET National Ports Authority (TNPA) has given hope to 570 high school learners in Hammarsdale, Durban, through a shoe donation drive held in March and April 2024.
The ‘Step into Generosity’ campaign was launched to keep learners in school by providing them with school shoes in the wake of winter.

The campaign is aimed at alleviating the impediment to the basic human right to education caused by the significant challenges faced by over 7 million South African children who must walk long distances to school without proper school shoes.

The campaign also recognises that by affording the learners with school shoes, they ensure they have a comfortable and confident walk to school.

The handover of school shoes was held at Ukusa Secondary School, Indlulamithi High School, Uxolophambili High School and Phezulu High and was also paired with career exhibitions where the Port of Durban’s employees shared their experiences in their chosen fields and advised learners on subjects to consider when pursuing careers in the maritime industry.

Nkumbuzi Ben-Mazwi, the acting port manager at the Port of Durban said the donation forms part of TNPA’s strategic intervention.

“This includes opening the port up to local communities, including schools, and the Port of Durban remained committed to contributing to social development activities. We will also continue to showcase the unique career opportunities that the maritime industry and TNPA offer and encourage our youth to take up careers in this space,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the schools, Musawenkosi Dlungwana, the deputy principal at Ukusa Secondary School, said they are grateful to TNPA for extending a hand of generosity to learners as most of these learners come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“The career talks gave both the learners and the teachers more insight on careers that the learners can venture into, and this will further enhance the learning experience for the learners,” he added.
