Dead abandoned cats found on Pinetown property

A cat rescue organisation is to be charged with animal cruelty after cats were found dead on their property, having been abandoned for almost two weeks.

A LARGE number of dead cats were found at a Glen Park home which is used by a rescue organisation that houses abandoned cats. The Kloof & Highway SPCA manager, Barbara Patrick, said they conducted a search on the property after being granted permission from the Magistrate’s Court.

“We received complaints from the community about the owner who left the cats in the house unattended for almost two weeks. We tried pursuing an order from the court to enter the premises.

“We found about 20 cats who had died in their cages. All the cats who were inside the house had died, and there are a few outside that were in bags, but we are not sure of the exact number yet,” she said.

Attending to the scene was also Marshall Security who described it as horrific.

“We found various carcasses in various states of decomposition scattered around a severely neglected property. The property in question is a granny flat at the back of the main property – the tenant who is responsible for this has disappeared,” stated Andreas Mathios.

Patrick said they do not have full details of the organisation or owner of the house.

“We are currently waiting on the SAPS to come to the scene and will be pressing charges for animal cruelty,” she said.
