THE Waterfall community convened a meeting, chaired by Ward 9 councillor Siyabonga Nala, to discuss plans for a new public high school. The growing community’s need for a public high school is a pressing concern, with the nearest schools located over 5km away in Hillcrest and Kloof.

“The Waterfall community is growing, and we lack public high schools for our members. The closest high schools are too far away, which is unacceptable,” Nala said, setting the agenda of the meeting, which also addressed water and electricity issues. 

Community members were invited to share their thoughts and suggestions. Possible sites for the school were proposed, including Cumic Park, which had already been zoned for educational use. Concerns about traffic and size were raised, but Nala encouraged the community to remain positive and open to alternative solutions as the planning process is still in the early stages. 

A five-member committee was established to facilitate the project’s progress and to engage with the Department of Education and other relevant parties. “This team will be made up of active members driving the process forward,” Nala explained.
