Beaconsfield Road remains unrepaired since heavy rains in 2021

Residents on Beaconsfield Road live in fear as the unrepaired road causes a safety hazard.

WESTVILLE North residents are raising fresh concerns about their safety as Beaconsfield Road, damaged during the April 2022 floods, remains unrepaired and continues to deteriorate.

A section of the road has sunk and is gradually caving in, making it increasingly unstable and posing serious risks to motorists and pedestrians.

Homeowners living near the damaged section say the road has become a severe safety hazard. They’ve again called on the municipality to urgently intervene.
“At this rate, the road will eventually be no more, and we won’t be able to go to work, which means no income. We are expected to pay rates and keep up to date, yet this repair has been overdue since 2021. Is that fair?” residents questioned.

Ward councillor Smoh Xulu said the last communication she had with the municipality acknowledges the project’s existence and its current status, but provides limited actionable information about next steps or timeframes.

“Their official communication confirms that the project has been added to a list of projects awaiting implementation through budget adjustment funds. Design work, including topographical surveys, was completed last year. The project is currently in a holding pattern, awaiting funding to begin the procurement process.

“Residents use this road daily as it is their only access to their homes. It continues to deteriorate under the weight of passing cars and changing weather conditions. I have repeatedly communicated this to the department, yet we still haven’t received any valid response,” she added.

In early 2025, the municipality had promised that repairs would begin by late February or early March, pending budget approval. However, as of April 2025, no work has commenced.
The eThekwini Municipality did not respond to media queries by the time of publishing.
