Family frustrated by court delays in Pinetown murder
Sikhumbuzo Zungu, who was arrested for the murder of Babongile Nkonyeni, is due back in court on June 3.
THE family of Babongile Nkonyeni, who was allegedly fatally stabbed by the father of her child, Sikhumbuzo Zungu, have expressed frustration over the delays the matter has suffered in court.
This after Zungu appeared at the Pinetown Regional Court on Thursday (May 21) where the matter was set back for June 3.
Expressing her frustration, Nkonyeni’s sister, Phumla Shezi, said she is of the view that the continuous delays to the trial’s commencement suggest the accused lacks remorse.
“He is still busy trying to get out on bail. It is like he is being begged, as he keeps being picky about the lawyers he wants. It is starting to look like the law favours criminals,” said Shezi.
She questioned why the trial does not get underway so that the accused can eventually be sentenced.

Zungu, who was refused bail late last year, previously appeared in court on April 21 when the matter was set back for a trial date and for him to secure legal representation.
Zungu made his first appearance at the regional court on April 21 after the matter had been transferred from the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that Zungu murdered Nkonyeni on Sunday, October 26, at about 03:00 at a residence in Pinetown. Zungu was arrested two days later.
Zungu faces an additional charge of theft because at the time of his arrest, he was allegedly found in possession of two cellphones belonging to Nkonyeni.
