Councillor shot and killed in Klaarwater near Mariannhill

The police say the motive for the councillor's murder is unknown at this stage and that a manhunt has been launched.

A WARD councillor was shot and killed in the Klaarwater area near Mariannhill on Thursday afternoon (August 6).

KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said different police units were combing the crime scene for clues and pieces of evidence following the shooting.

“Information available at this stage suggests that the deceased was in his office with several community members when an unknown man arrived and posed as one who needed assistance from the deceased.

“The deceased reportedly went out to assist the man and the suspect drew a firearm and shot the deceased several times and he was declared dead at the scene.

“The suspect fled the scene on foot. The motive of the killing remains unknown at this stage, and a manhunt for the suspect is underway,” said Netshiunda.
