ADVERTORIAL: Bathu – proudly local, globally bold

This Heritage Month, The Pavilion Shopping Centre continues to celebrate local brands that embody the spirit of South Africa - and few do it quite like Bathu. Founded by entrepreneur and group CEO Theo Baloyi, Bathu is more than a sneaker company - it is a movement rooted in pride, storytelling and community empowerment.

The idea for Bathu was sparked when Baloyi realised that Africa had no representative in the global sneaker community. “Asia had Onitsuka, North America had Nike and Converse, and Europe had Adidas and Puma,” he explains. “It became clear that Africa needed its own homegrown brand, one that our people could proudly affiliate with.”

Even the name itself speaks to this identity. Bathu is township slang for ‘shoe’, a term that resonates across cultures and communities in South Africa. In choosing it, Baloyi anchored the brand in authenticity and local pride – making sure the name would carry as much meaning as the sneakers themselves.
That vision has since grown into one of South Africa’s most inspiring success stories. From its inception, Bathu has been built on the ethos of being proudly South African. Each sneaker carries more than just style – it carries a story. Through innovative product-led campaigns and meaningful sneaker naming conventions, Bathu uses footwear as a canvas to celebrate South Africa’s rich history and diverse heritage.

But Bathu’s impact goes far beyond fashion. At its core, the brand is committed to addressing one of South Africa’s most pressing challenges – unemployment. By creating sustainable jobs and igniting hope through its expanding retail network, Bathu is changing lives with every step. “We don’t just sell a great product; we pair it with a great story,” says Baloyi. “And that story is about our people.”

Looking ahead, Bathu continues to innovate, with exciting sneaker launches planned for the coming months alongside its much-anticipated Big Bathu Sale. As Durban and the rest of the country mark Heritage Month, Bathu stands as a symbol of resilience, creativity, and pride – reminding us that when we walk in our own story, we walk taller.
