City warns of criminals posing as municipal workers

The municipality said it is working with law enforcement to address the issue.

THE eThekwini Municipality has warned the public of criminal imposters posing as municipal employees and contract staff in order to enter people’s homes.

The warning comes a week after the City announced one of its latest initiatives of installing smart meters across the city, a project that is part of the Smart City Strategy.

Municipality spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela urged residents to report any suspicious behaviour to its Revenue Protection Division.

“The public is advised to request identification before allowing anyone inside their premises. It has been brought to the City’s attention that there are criminals posing as municipal employees and contract staff. As we prioritise the safety of our residents, the City will be working with law enforcement to investigate the matter,” he said. To authenticate an employee’s identification details or to report any suspicious behaviour, residents can contact our Revenue Protection Division,” he said
