Marriage has got it challenges but the Lukes highlighted that God has been in the centre of their life.
Andrew and Wendy met through family and said they have lots of similar interests, which are mainly outdoor activities like camping, and they adore animals.
“We also worked together; she was my secretary. I think we were already dating at that time,” said Andrew.
After two years of dating, they tied the knot at the Brooklyn Methodist Church on November 18, 1972.
Asked what attracted them to each other, the couple looked at each other and smiled. “She was so beautiful, but I truly believe that the Lord brought us together,” said Andrew.
Wendy laughed and said she married Andrew for his sense of humour.
The couple moved from Pretoria to Westville in 1995 where Andrew was the minister of the Westville Baptist Church for 12 years.
The Lukes believe that the love they have for each other has kept them going for all these years. “We basically love each other, but most importantly, we made a commitment before the Lord that when times are tough, we will stick together,” said Wendy.
Andrew advised young couples to not try put things right by changing their partners but rather by changing themselves. “Marriage is give and take, and you have to be selfless,” said Andrew.
They are blessed with twin boys and a daughter. They are also grandparents to six grandchildren.
