“The aim of scouting is to help develop boys, girls and young adults to achieve their full potential as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities by – developing their leadership skills; developing their character; training them as responsible citizens, and making them healthy in body, mind and spirit,” said pack scouter Charlie Lalouette.
Dean Callan, adult leader, said the clean-up in Cowies Hill park area is part of this year’s Scouts South Africa’s partnership with the World Organisation of the Scout Movement’s (WOSM) and the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE)’s Litter Less Campaign.
“The campaign is simply to pick up litter within our schools, streets, parks, beaches and to commit to Littering Less and being Champions for Nature. The efforts of these individual meerkats, cubs and scouts will enable them to earn their ‘Litter Less’ Badge and will also count towards their social responsibility commitment and help them earn this badge,” he said.
Lalouette added that the 1st Pinetown Scouts are excited to be able to contribute towards eThekwini’s Enviro Week and to WOSM’s sustainable development goal of four billion hours of community service by 2030.

Scott Allnatt, co-founder and managing director of Shelley Residential, applauded the boys and girls of the 1st Pinetown Scouts Group and their Litter Less campaign. “By organising a clean-up of Cowies Hill Park, these children are taking a stand and showing their community, through action and not just words, that littering will no longer be tolerated in our neighbourhood.”
“As for Pinetown Tidy Town, we are pleased to assist in any way we can with community initiatives,” said Zane Welensky.
