World Egg Day: To replace or not to replace

It's World Egg Day, however, many us will have to find ways to replace eggs due to a national shortage in the country. Don't fear, we've got you.

EGGS are a staple for many people in the world, so it’s no surprise that we celebrate World Egg Day every year on the second Friday in October.

According to the International Egg Commission, the day was established in 1996 in Vienna. The International Egg Commission is a global organisation dedicated to advancing the egg industry, to promote the significance of eggs in human nutrition, food security and overall well-being.

This year, the theme of World Egg Day is ‘Eggs for a healthy future’.

Unfortunately, it may not be possible for everyone to commemorate the egg today due to bird flu cases which have subsequently caused a shortage of eggs and chicken. People now have to find egg replacers so they can still enjoy their favourite dishes.

Here are three ways you replace eggs in your daily life, according to Healthline:

Applesauce
Applesauce is a purée made from cooked apples. It’s often sweetened or flavoured with other spices like nutmeg and cinnamon. Using 1/4 cup (about 65 grams) of applesauce can replace an egg in most recipes. It’s best to use unsweetened applesauce. If you’re using a sweetened variety, you should reduce the amount of sugar or sweetener in the recipe itself.

Vinegar and baking soda
Mixing 1 teaspoon (7 grams) of baking soda with 1 tablespoon (15 grams) of vinegar can replace 1 egg in most recipes. When mixed together, vinegar and baking soda start a chemical reaction that produces carbon dioxide and water, which makes baked goods light and airy. This substitution works best for cakes, cupcakes and quick breads.

Vegan eggs
Finally, we have a recipe for fried eggs, vegan-style. If you’re allergic to eggs, this will also work great for you. Click on the link for the full recipe.
