#IEBmatricresults2023: Kearsney top learner bags eight As

Nthato Sifumba said it was his dream to leave behind a remarkable legacy at Kearsney College so to become the top student at the school is a dream come true for him.

THE Independent Examinations Board has recorded an overall matric pass rate of 98.46% in the 2023 assessments.

Private school pupils who wrote the National Senior Certificate (NSC) through the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) achieved a 98.46% pass rate in the 2023 exams. The figure was a slight improvement on the 98.42% recorded in 2022.

Highway school Kearsney College received a 100% pass rate for the 11th consecutive year. The matric class also achieved a 99.2% Bachelor’s Degree Exemption (university pass).

One of the top achievers from Kearsney College is Nthato Sifumba who bagged eight As.

Nthato said he is thrilled to be the top student at Kearsney College.

From the moment Sifumba enrolled at Kearsney in Grade Eight, he said it was his dream to leave behind a remarkable legacy and engrave the Sifumba name onto the school’s history, so to become the top student at the school is indeed a dream come true for him.

Asked about his message to the Class of 2024, Nthato said the most useful tip that he could give to the matric learners is to finish all their assignments and projects straight away.

“The workload increases immensely from Grade 11 to matric, and the number of assignments, projects and deadlines can become overwhelming, so my advice is to get started on each assignment early and finish them as soon as possible before they start piling up.

“If you get assigned a task today, get started on it today. Don’t procrastinate or wait for tomorrow because, tomorrow, there will be a new assignment on top of that,” he said.

Nthato thanked his family for his great results, especially his parents.

“They both come from humble backgrounds. My mother was born in Qumbu in Eastern Cape, and my father hails from Qwaqwa in the Free State. They have worked so hard to put me in one of the most prestigious schools in the country which is Kearsney College.

“I have had all the support and the best teachers who have enabled me to succeed. It means so much to me that I could make my parents proud after everything they have done for me and after all the sacrifices they have made for me. Thank you, Mom and Dad,” he said.

Kearsney College headmaster Patrick Lees said he was delighted with the overall results, which were a testament to the incredible work put in by the boys and their teachers, with support from the boys’ parents.

“Kearsney’s academic support programme has paid dividends, with the average pupil achieving excellent results, many beyond their wildest dreams,” he said.
