The MEC of Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal, Nonhlanhla Khoza, reported that the department has responded swiftly to the alleged incident.

“Allegations suggest that a toddler under the care of the crèche may have been subjected to sexual assault, prompting grave concern and immediate action from authorities. Initial reports indicate that the toddler, entrusted to the crèche by her mother, was found sleeping upon the mother’s return to collect her on Wednesday (February 14) afternoon.

“Disturbing signs observed by the mother, including the discovery of stained underwear in the child’s school bag and indications of distress raised immediate suspicions of possible sexual violation.

“The mother enlisted the help of a neighbour to check on the child, confirming the suspicion of rape due to visible distress and evidence of bodily fluids,” explained Khoza.

In response to these developments, the department has dispatched a specialised team of social workers to visit the home of the affected toddler.

“Their mandate is to provide vital support to the family during this traumatic time and to gather crucial information to facilitate a thorough investigation into this deeply concerning matter,” said the MEC.

The MEC further emphasised the importance of enforcing stringent adherence to prescribed norms and standards within all crèches.

“We must ascertain whether the crèche in question complies with regulations aimed at safeguarding the welfare of children under their care,” she asserted.
