WATCH: Snakes of the 031 – the Natal Black Snake

The snake is extremely docile and is found in the Highway area in Durban.

CAXTON Local Media has partnered with snake rescuer Nick Evans for a series called ‘Snakes of the 031’.

In this series, Nick will be introducing the most common snakes of Durban.

In the sixth part of our series, Nick speaks about the Natal Black Snake.

According to Evans, this species of snake is normally found in the Highway area of Durban.

“They are a fossorial species which means they spend most of their time underground. These types of snakes are usually identified by the shape of the head or structure of the snout. They usually come out during rainy periods and prey on frogs, rodents and other snakes.

“They are extremely docile snakes. They are mildly venomous but there are very few bites recorded. They are often confused for Black Mambas but they are a more shiny black colour,” Evans said.

Evans urged residents that should they see any snake, they should contact a professional rather than approaching the snake themselves.

“The best thing to do is monitor the snake and call in a professional,” he said.

Contact him on 072 809 5806.
