Support pours in for Wheelchair Challenge

SBSTanks court was used to host a wheelchair basketball match which donors and employees supported wholeheartedly, creating a fun awareness event as part of the CEO Wheelchair Challenge.

SBSTANKS held its fourth annual Wheelchair Challenge. The target for this year’s fundraiser was set high at R400 000. At the time of printing, the company in Pinetown had raised R328 764 towards their target.

This day involved the SBSTanks CEO, Delayne Gray, spending 14 hours in a wheelchair to raise funds and awareness for people living with disabilities. The day’s festivities included a series of wheelchair basketball matches held between teams that consisted of players from the following groups: eThekwini Wheelchair Basketball Team, various suppliers of SBSTanks, Made for More, Westville Girls’ High School, Westville Boys’ High School, Reddam House Ballito and East Coast Radio participated as teams.

Gray mentioned that the successful and poignant part of the day was the handing over of six children’s wheelchairs to children who had been identified in the community as being in need.

These children, along with the other individuals who will receive wheelchairs due to this initiative, are the reason why Gray said he continues to initiate this challenge every year.

“The number of people living with disabilities who do not have access to a wheelchair is startling, and the NPOs that work with these individuals are in desperate need of funds and public awareness. This year’s Wheelchair Challenge proved hugely successful in assisting with both above-mentioned issues,” said Gray.

At the wheelchair challenge: Meghan Hourquebie, Hollywood Foundation; Darren Maule, East Coast Radio; Ashleigh Gray, SBSTanks and Erika Hendrikz, SBSTanks.

Assemblies were held at both Westville Girls’ and Westville Boys’ high schools leading up to the day of the challenge, and the principal of Westville Girls’ High School, Russell Untiedt, also spent a day of the week in a wheelchair to raise funds and awareness for those living with disabilities.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
