Westville Girls’ continues to shine

This year marks the school's 60th anniversary.

THE year 2024 marks Westville Girls’ High School 60th anniversary.

The school has grown to accommodate nearly 1 200 learners and has maintained an incredible academic streak of a 100% matric pass rate since 1991.

Principal Russell Untiedt said this is a significant milestone in the illustrious history of their beloved school, which was opened officially in January 1964.

“This milestone provides us with the opportunity to honour and delight in six decades of commitment, resilience and the sustained pursuit of excellence, which have shaped our school into the shining gem it is today.”

He said a 60th anniversary is traditionally linked to a diamond, which is why the school has included it in their bespoke badge for 2024 and linked it to their slogan for the year – ‘Shaping brilliance since 1964’.

“Just like a diamond, our school has weathered the pressures of time, transforming challenges into opportunities and our learners into polished gems.”

Across its 60 years of existence, Untiedt said their school has welcomed girls into its embrace whose minds and characters are still unformed and whose potential is yet to be realised.

“During the five years they are with us, through the dedicated efforts of our teachers, parents and the learners themselves, this potential undergoes a meticulous process of cutting and polishing. The challenges faced, the opportunities presented, the lessons learned and the friendships forged are the facets that shape and define our girls.

“May our school continue to shine brightly for many more decades, and may the metaphor of a diamond inspire us all to strive always for brilliance, resilience and unwavering excellence,” said the proud principal.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
