Volunteers needed to help monitor fires in the Upper Highway area

Strong winds and dry conditions have seen numerous fires break out across parts of the country over the past days, with fire warnings being issued in numerous provinces.

THE Gillitts Park Community Association (GPCA) has appealed for the assistance of neighborhood watches to manage, monitor and put out smaller fires that had broken out across the upper highway areas on Monday.

The eThekwini Fire Department responded to a large number of call-outs as strong winds fueled several blazes including a factory fire in the Queensburgh area.

On Monday the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (KZNCOGTA) said disaster management teams were on high alert due to severe wind warnings.

Tracey Lynch, a member of the GPCA said that there has been a few incidents in the past few days.

“The was another one Brackenhill Road, Waterfall and in the Westmead area. The one in Ashley broke around 10:00 in the morning and the fire department tried to control it until 23:00 at night,” she said.

These incidents led to the Upper Highway neighborhood watches forming a group of volunteers.

“We require fire beaters and we are appealing the public to please contribute towards this initiative,” said Lynch.

She extended her gratitude to the fire department who are fighting fires all over the Upper Highway area.

“This was true teamwork. I wish to thank all the responders, patrollers and the community who were phenomenal in tackling fires all over. Buildings, office parks and homes were saved because of those who don’t wear capes.”
