Pinetown detective’s sleuthing skills secure life sentences

Pinetown SAPS Detective Sergeant Sugar Sosibo has a consistent record of top convictions in murder cases.

DETECTIVE Sergeant Sugar Sosibo is one of Pinetown SAPS’ top cops and is known for his outstanding work in solving murder cases.

Sosibo has received many certificates for his hard work and has recently received more certificates for his recent investigative work.

Speaking to the Highway Mail, Sosibo highlighted two cases where he was proud that the perpetrators were brought to book.

Although one of the convictions took place last year, he said that it was one of the most challenging cases in his police career thus far as he received many death threats.

Referring to the murder that took place in New Germany in 2020, where a security guard was shot, he said hitmen were hired to kill the manager of a logistics company in Dinkelman Road.

“Upon the manager’s arrival, the guard was opening the gate and was caught in the crossfire. The manager was injured.”

He said the incident happened on a Friday, and after working 24/7 with his team, the men were arrested on a Monday in the Bester area in Ntuzuma for murder and attempted murder.

“The suspects were sentenced to life imprisonment,” he said.

Although he studied marketing after finishing matric, Sosibo believes it was his fate to become a policeman as he has always had a passion for it.

“Being a voice for victims in court fulfils me as the community rely on us as police officers to obtain justice for them. Investigating murder cases is challenging, especially when there are no witnesses. We are always in need of the community’s assistance.”

The hardworking officer was also the lead detective for a murder case where two people were convicted early last month at the Durban High Court.

Nkosinathi Zungu (37) and Nompumelelo Goncalves (28) were sentenced to life and 30 years imprisonment respectively after their convictions for kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances and murder, which they committed in September 2020.

Goncalves was sentenced to a further eight years imprisonment for two counts of defeating the course of justice. Goncalves and the deceased (her partner), Nkosi Timmy Langa, lived together in Pinetown.

Branch Commander Detective Colonel Heeralall said Sosibo’s outstanding investigative work and consistent record of top convictions make him a shining example of excellence in their team.

“We would like to congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.”

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
