Local author teaches children through her books
Nadine Foster aims to take children through their developmental stages through her Sophie Snail books.
HONEYBEEZ Pre-school learners recently enjoyed an engaging reading session with Nadine Foster, the author and illustrator of the Sophie Snail book series. Foster shared that her inspiration to write children’s books stems from a passion for helping children navigate early life challenges through storytelling.

“The first book, Sophie Snail Makes Friends, explores how the character learns to make friends for the first time,” Foster explained. “The second book introduces the idea of different kinds of friends, such as those with disabilities or unique circumstances. It teaches children, in a simple and relatable way, not to stare, point, or make comments, but to accept people for who they are, showing that everyone is special and capable of friendship.”
Since the start of the academic year, Foster has visited six schools with her mother, a former pre-school teacher with 30 years of experience. Together, they bring the stories to life for young audiences.

“My mother does the actual reading because she knows how to handle the children and keep them engaged,” Foster shared.
Foster is continuing her school tour in Durban, using her stories to educate and inspire young minds.
