Pinetown hospital opens additional paediatric ward

Due to high demand of paediatric beds, Life Crompton Hospital has a new 16-bed paediatric ward.

LIFE Crompton Hospital has expanded its paediatric services by adding a new 16-bed paediatric ward, increasing its total number of paediatric beds to 36.

Hospital manager Zakiya Essa said the addition of new beds makes it one of the largest paediatric units in the province.

She explained that as the only Acute Private Healthcare facility in Pinetown and surrounding areas, the demand for paediatric beds is high.

“Patients often had to wait long periods for a bed, and at times, we had to transfer them to other hospitals,” she said.

Essa highlighted that the addition of these beds to the hospital was completed in a short space of time and thanked her team for their commitment and dedication to the hospital’s future strategy.

“I want to thank everyone who contributed to making this possible,” she added.

The new paediatric ward is strategically located near the Maternity and NICU, creating a well-integrated healthcare complex designed to support both mother and child.

“Additionally, the hospital has partnered with the Department of Home Affairs for birth registrations at the hospital, and is focussed on growing paediatric surgery,” said Essa.

Dr. Ashmika Gokhul, one of the paediatricians, expressed her excitement about the development.

“This ward was much needed. We no longer have to transfer our patients to other hospitals, and it reduces the need for us to travel to check on them,” she said.

Another paediatrician, Dr. Ridwan Omar, thanked the hospital management for the upgrade, emphasising its positive impact.

“It was challenging to follow up on patients who had been transferred, sometimes as far as Pietermaritzburg. Now, we can maintain the doctor-patient relationship, which is crucial for effective care,” he stated.
