BEWARE: Heavy rains wreaking havoc in the Highway area

The City advises residents to exercise caution, to stay indoors if possible and not cross rivers or flooded roads.

THE heavy rains are wreaking havoc in the Highway area with reports of flooding in various suburbs.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson reported that they are on Stapleton Road where it is believed that two vehicles have washed away in a river that is running alongside the road.

Stapleton Road, which is undergoing construction work, is known to get flooded every time there are heavy rains.

The flooding in various areas follows the Level 6 warning from the South African Weather Service.

Yesterday the weather service warned of disruptive rainfall which they said was expected to affect KwaZulu-Natal today, Thursday, March 13, and tomorrow, Friday, March 14.

In various posts on Facebook, there are videos and pictures shared of the flooding in Pinetown, St Johns and Kloof.

The Kloof CPF executive committee shared on the community groups that multiple roads in Kloof are flooded.

They urged the public to not attempt to cross them.

“We have multiple cars stuck up to window height, and we are doing our best to assess and assist at each location.

“We also have trees down in multiple roads as well – we won’t get to all of them tonight but will danger tape those we can’t get to,” said the committee.

They also reported that Kloof Falls Road through the gorge is closed at Kloof Falls and Ronalds Road.

The City advises residents to exercise caution, to stay indoors if possible, and to avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary.

“The public is reminded to not attempt to cross rivers and streams.

“Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution and maintain a safe following distance while driving on wet roads,” said the City.

In cases of emergencies, the public can contact the City’s temporary emergency number on 031 322 4457.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
