WATCH: Police take high schoolers to work

The pupils said they learnt about the importance of police officers in communities and the efforts they put in to curb crime.

A SANCTUARY for citizens seeking protection and a menacing stronghold for those these citizens may be fleeing from, a police station is different things to all depending on which side of the law they stand.

This was the general lesson imparted to two Highway College grade 12 pupils who visited the Pinetown police station on May 26, as part of take a child to work day.

The importance of police officers in communities and the efforts they put in to curb crime was what the pupils, Bandile Ngidi and Caleb Martins, took away from the experience.

“It was a very informative visit because it helps the youth open their eyes to what the police go through on a daily basis,” said Caleb.

Bandile added that besides the officer’s daily experiences, “we learnt about how the police system works and the processes and procedures that are followed when criminals are taken to jail”.

Being part of the station commander’s strategy meeting, learning about the critical work done by the human resource department and about the equally important work done throughout the station – from the charge office to the holding cells – the high schoolers were taken through the inner workings of a police station.
