Trio bust for suspected stolen copper cables to appear next week for bail

According to the police, the suspects were remanded in custody following their appearance at the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

THE three suspects who were arrested by the Hawks on Monday for transporting suspected stolen copper cables are due back in court on June 11 for a bail application.

Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Simphiwe Mhlongo said following the trio’s appearance at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, June 4, they were remanded in custody.

The suspects were arrested after a truck transporting suspected stolen copper cables was investigated by the Hawks on the M31 near Pinetown.

The three suspects, aged 21, 29 and 34, were arrested for possession of property suspected to be stolen, and damage to essential infrastructure.

Police found 4240kg of copper cables to the street value of approximately R848 000. Telkom and eThekwini Municipality officials positively identified the cables as theirs.
