Highbury learner launches school’s newspaper

When Grade 5 learner, Benjamin Janse van Rensburg, had an idea to start a school newspaper, he didn’t keep it to himself - he made an appointment with the principal to pitch it.

WHEN most 10-year-olds have a bright idea, it tends to stay just that – a thought. But for Benjamin Janse van Rensburg, a Grade Five learner at Highbury Preparatory School, inspiration quickly turned into action.

Driven by a passion for storytelling and school spirit, Ben took it upon himself to launch Highbury’s very own newspaper.

With a clear vision and no shortage of enthusiasm, he booked a meeting with headmaster Roland Lacock to pitch the idea.

The principal, who is always up for encouraging initiative, told the learner to bring him a first draft by the end of the week.

True to his word, Ben delivered. But what he didn’t expect was to walk past the school notice board days later and see that first edition proudly displayed for all to read.

Since that moment, the Highbury Herald has gone from a one-off publication to a bi-weekly fixture. It has become a beloved part of campus life, with boys gathering to read the latest news, opinions, and fun facts.

“At Highbury, we believe in raising boys who are confident, curious, and full of ideas – and then giving them the space to explore those ideas.

“Whether it’s music, maths, or something unexpected like journalism, we encourage boys to discover what lights them up. The Highbury Herald is a great example of what happens when boys are given that freedom,” said the principal.

He added that Ben’s initiative is a shining example of what happens when creativity, confidence and courage come together.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
