HIGHWAY’S Warren Moolman broke away on the second lap to win the Brink Karkloof Road Race on Sunday and will take the lead in the log for the new Hills & Waves Road Cycling Series presented by MD24.
The cycling champ crossed the line at the finish just outside Howick 45 seconds ahead of the experienced Kevin Benkenstein, with David Shelly claiming the final step of the podium, while Daniel van der Watt and junior Ryan Viviers rounded out the top five.
In the women’s race, Frances Janse van Rensburg edged out Silke Bester after they were both able to join a fast men’s group early on, while Frann Scott ended in a distant third.

In wet conditions, the top five finishers in the men’s race got away on the opening circuit of the two-lap out-and-back race, and then the group broke apart as they tackled the deceptive climbs on the second lap.
It was a race dominated by the youngsters with three U23 and three U17s in the top seven, with veteran Benkenstein getting a glimpse of the future from up close.
Moolman, a former Westville Boys’ High School learner, made it a relatively easy win for the younger generation, with Benkenstein able to edge out the two U23s.
Viviers then led home the trio of juniors, ahead of Cameron Mackridge and Connor Hawkins, the first two to cross the line from the chasing group.
