Juniors encouraged to take on wild ride
The inaugural Balwin Properties Wild Ride taking place at Westown Square this Sunday, October 19, is set to entertain both mountain bike enthusiasts and beginners alike when they take to the trails.
YOUNG up-and-coming riders are invited to tackle the event that offers distances for all age groups at the 2025 Balwin Properties Wild Ride at Westown Square on Sunday, October19.
As entries continue to stream in for the first edition of the event in Durban’s Outer West, several schools have riders taking part in the various distances that are on offer.
Race director Damian Bradley said the event has been geared to cater for younger riders who might be getting into the sport of mountain biking, as well as parents who potentially have a mountain bike that hasn’t been used in a while.
Bradley hopes that the Wild Ride can contribute to a resurgence of mountain biking in the Outer West area of Durban.
“We’ve created this event to show off what we have to offer in the Westown Square area from a trails perspective. With the development of Westown Square and the surrounding area we’ve been able to put together trails that will test riders of all abilities.

“The eThekwini Mountain Bike Association (EMBA) team have worked really hard to put together trails that will be exciting and memorable for all. The focus for us has been to create an event that is appealing to all ages and all abilities.”
There are three different races on offer for riders, with the longest event being the 35km Cactus with a minimum age threshold of 15. The 18km Tumbleweed is for those aged eight years and older.
The 8km Colt is for children under the age of eight years who are accompanied by an adult.
Bradley encouraged young riders and their families to come and experience the trails and the hospitality that the event has to offer.
“This is the mountain bike race on your doorstep, and we want families from the area to come and enjoy the area and the family-focused atmosphere that we want to create. There is some incredible terrain for the riders to negotiate, and it will be memorable for riders of all abilities. Whether you are an experienced rider or a passionate beginner, this event is designed to be a must-do event of fun, endurance and beauty,” Bradley added.
