Malvern mother and daughter triumph in competition
A Malvern mother and daughter took top honours at Durban’s Golden Brush Awards, showcasing exceptional miniature painting skills.

A MALVERN mother and daughter showed off their amazing brush control to win big at this year’s Golden Brush Awards.
The Golden Brush is an annual challenge (open to anyone) which sees competitors paint small-scale models, minis, busts, or dioramas in several categories.
The competition is viewed as Durban’s premier miniature painting event.
Competitors are also judged for any add-ons, crafted or modelled with clay, as well as the bases of the models, minis, busts, or dioramas.
Candice and Sinead Leth won in their respective categories with the former winning overall and taking home the Golden Brush champion or Best in Show trophy.
Sinead was crowned the winner in the Beginner (Large) category for her detailed painting of a 3D-print involving the character Jinx from the Arcane game and Netflix series, while Candice won gold in the Intermediate (Large) for her Absolute Wonder Woman 3D-print figure and gold in the Open Category for her incredible painting of a 3D-Print of a Yautja, commonly known as Predators from the Predator film franchise.
Sinead said the competition was a good learning experience and that she would definitely be entering next year’s competition.
“Jinx is a character I love so much and I knew I had to get the colouring of the print correct. The hardest part I felt was getting her tattoos on her arms and detailing it because I had to use the finest of brushes,” Sinead said.
Candice, a creative artist, drew on her childhood memories to recreate the accurate colours of two iconic characters.
“I’m still new to miniature paintings but I had so much fun. I’ve always wanted to do a Predator and because I’m part of a community of artists I was able to get a 3D resin print of the creature. It is one of my favourite movies and I remember sneaking into the lounge and watching it. I think my brother and I watched the first movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger hundreds of times. With the Absolute Wonder Woman, it is one of my favourite alternate comic books so I was lucky enough to paint two of my favourite characters,” she said.
Because of her win, Candice will have to enter in the veterans’ category next year, but is looking forward to the challenge.
