Durban mother inspires thousands with school lunch ideas

A Durban mom turned school lunchbox stress into inspiration, growing a Facebook page with nearly 30 000 followers.

PACKING school lunches has become a daily struggle for many parents and guardians, especially with schools reopening and routines returning.

One mother, who was excited about her son starting school seven years ago, started a Facebook page called Lunch Box Lunatic which has gained almost 30 000 followers.

The Durban mother said she posted a pic of his first ever lunch box as she was so excited for him to open it and feel some lunch time love from mama.

“I got so many questions about it; from where I got the box to the snacks and what things were what. I struggled to keep up with replying. My husband actually said as a joke, ‘You may as well start a Facebook page for just his lunch’,” said the mother.

So that night, she did just that and listed everything in the lunch box each day, great deals that she found, and accessories.

In the thermo:
Watermelon and melon

“The page has never been about money or sponsorships; it’s more to give moms and guardians ideas so they don’t keep making the same thing.

“I love finding them the cool new lunch accessories and great specials, and giving hints and tips and easy recipes to make life a little easier. That is what it’s about for me.”

Breakfast:
Bacon and cheese omelette with sourdough toast.
Probiotic drinking yoghurt.

The woman behind the Lunch Box Lunatic Facebook page is a 42-year-old married, full-time working mother to her son Shaw. She is also his U11 Hillcrest Villagers Rugby team’s manager and his extramural shuttle.

“But I make it work and can still manage a cute, healthy lunch box every day.”

As long as parents need lunch ideas, she said she’ll be here to post more inspiration for them with the addition of teachers’ gifts and cake sale ideas along the way.
