DEUTSCHE Schule Durban (DSD) has shared a moving tribute after the passing of former learner, Daniel Hill.

The school remembers Daniel for his warmth, his energy, and the positive impact he had on everyone around him.

“He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and friendship that will remain in our hearts forever.”

Speaking on behalf of the school, Ellen Botha said Daniel began his journey at DSD in 2015 as a kindergarten learner and completed his primary schooling  in 2024 as a proud member of the Grade Seven class.

“Daniel was the youngest child of Uta and Clint Hill, and a beloved younger brother to Matthew.”

Botha said what many people did not know is that Daniel was named Daniel Roland Hill in honour of his grandfather, Roland Fritsch, who was one of the founding members of Deutsche Schule Durban in 1971 and later the first chairperson of the school board.

“The school hall was also named after him – the Roland Fritsch Aula – in recognition of his dedication and lasting contribution to the school community.”

After finishing Grade Seven at DSD, Daniel  attended Westville Boys’ High School (WBHS) and would have been in Grade Nine this year.

“Tragically, Daniel passed away suddenly on Saturday, January 17 after contracting the flu. He was deeply loved by his peers, teachers, and families throughout our school community.

“He had a special connection with the younger learners, who were always drawn to his kindness and playful spirit.”

During break times, Botha said Daniel could often be found playing tag with them, happily letting them chase after him, moments that brought great joy to many.

“He was a superb athlete, Daniel excelled in sport and was especially gifted as a swimmer. His talent, dedication, and sportsmanship were admired by all who knew him.”

Head of marketing at Westville Boys High School, Thomas Rist, said Daniel joined the school in 2025. He joined his older brother Matthew at WBHS as a Grade Eight learner.

“He immediately made an impact in the classroom and especially in the pool as a gifted swimmer, where he made the school’s swimming team and U14A water polo team. He also had fun on the sport field by playing football.

“His friends described him as a kind and loving person who loved to put smiles on people’s faces with his sense of humor.”

His funeral mass service will be held on January 30 at the Mariannhill Monastery Church, 98 Abbot Francis Road, at 11:30.
