CCTV cameras installed on City’s buses to enhance safety
The municipality says the cameras are mounted inside the buses to monitor passenger areas as well as the external surroundings.
AS part of ongoing efforts to strengthen passenger safety, improve security monitoring and support efficient public transport operations, eThekwini Municipality has installed closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on the City’s People Mover bus fleet.

The cameras are mounted inside the buses to monitor passenger areas as well as the external surroundings.
No cameras have been installed at bus stops or other transport facilities under this project.
This system allows for real-time monitoring, supporting incident management, operational oversight and investigations relating to safety, security or service delivery.
The visible presence of CCTV cameras also serves as a deterrent to criminal or unsafe behaviour, helping create a safer and more reliable travel experience.
In line with the Protection of Personal Information (POPIA) Act, the municipality informs all passengers that video recording is in operation when boarding People Mover buses.

Clear signage has also been placed onboard to notify passengers that they may be recorded when using the service.
“All footage is managed lawfully, securely and strictly for purposes relating to safety, security and operational management.
“Access is limited to authorised personnel, and recordings are retained only for periods permitted by POPIA and Municipal policies.
“The Municipality remains committed to safeguarding the privacy and personal information of public transport users while implementing measures that enhance safety, accountability and service reliability.
“Passengers are encouraged to continue using the People Mover service with confidence, knowing that safety and privacy protection is in place,” said the City’s Marketing and Communications Directorate.
