NPOs host potjie competition to empower youth
Two NPOs will host a community potjie competition to raise funds for programmes that help prepare young people for the workplace.
TO help expand its accredited Work Readiness Programme into more schools and communities, two NPOs which are passionate about youth empowerment will host a potjie competition and everyone is invited.
Hosted by Sitapal Youth Empowerment NPC, in collaboration with Ukuphila Okuthinta, the event is held to bridge the gap between school and the workplace.
The fundraiser will be held at Cumec Park, 53 Link Road, Waterfall, on Saturday, March 21 from 09:30 to 14:00. For potjie teams, set-up is at 08:30.
Both NPOs receive very little sponsorship or donations.
“All programmes are sustained through community-driven initiatives such as this fundraiser. Proceeds from the event will directly support youth development, school outreach, and skills training interventions,” said Charmaine Hansraj, chairperson of Ukuphila Okuthinta NPO.

The NPOs said they address this gap by equipping carefully selected and vetted learners with practical, workplace-ready skills, including CV writing and budgeting.
“We also teach them interview preparation, code of conduct and professional behaviour, time management and productivity, workplace engagement and safety awareness. In addition, we equip learners with first aid training,” said Sitapal Youth Empowerment NPC chairperson Lenny Paltu.
Since 2018, Ukuphila Okuthinta NPO has implemented four school gardens, conducted community outreach programmes, distributed food parcels, led winter drive initiatives and delivered accredited work readiness training
The organisations also work alongside schools such as King George Academy in the Upper Highway.
Sarah Larriva from the academy said South Africa faces a growing challenge where many learners, particularly those with learning barriers or on the autism spectrum, struggle to transition from school into meaningful employment.
“Some are unable to obtain traditional academic certificates and risk being lost in the system. Our goal is simple, to give young people a real chance. Even if we change the future for just a few learners, it matters.
“Learners with special needs also need to be empowered, we need need mini entrepreneurs. This is about giving somebody a chance,” said Larriva.
Make a difference
Paltu added that the Potjie Competition Fundraiser will not only raise funds but also bring the community together.
“There will be a potjie competition with prizes for first, second and third place teams, potjie meals for sale, hot and cold beverages,” he said.
The NPOs invite non-food vendors to be part of the fundraiser.
“There will be something for everyone. Children will have their face painted, there will be a jumping castle and family-friendly activities,” said Hansraj.
