Why organising SARS documents early matters?
Tax season can be smooth if one organises documents early, understands the filing deadlines, and uses SARS’ digital platforms.
AS South Africa’s tax season approaches, taxpayers are encouraged to start preparing early to avoid unnecessary stress, delays, and penalties. Organising your financial documents ahead of time can make the filing process smoother and help ensure accurate submissions to the South African Revenue Service (SARS)
SARS has encouraged taxpayers to prepare documentation early to avoid last-minute delays and to ensure quicker processing of assessments and refunds.
Getting your documents together before filing season officially opens can help you avoid rushing at the last minute, reduce the risk of missing important information, speed up the filing process, prevent delays in receiving refunds, minimise the chance of SARS queries or audits and ensure all deductions and claims are correctly submitted.

Keeping records organised throughout the year also makes future tax seasons significantly easier.
Before submitting your tax return, ensure you have the following documents ready; South African ID or passport, tax reference number, updated banking details and proof of address if required
One should also have income documents; IRP5/IT3(a) certificates from employers, salary slips, pension or retirement income statements, investment and dividend certificates, rental income records and freelance or business income invoices
Deduction and supporting documents such as medical aid tax certificates, retirement annuity contribution certificates, travel logbooks (if applicable), educational expense records, charitable donation receipts and business expense receipts for self-employed individuals must also be ready.
How to submit your tax return
SARS has made online filing easier through digital platforms, allowing taxpayers to avoid long queues at branches. The main submission methods include SARS eFiling, SARS MobiApp, Auto-assessment notifications and appointments at SARS branches (if necessary).
SARS advise using online channels wherever possible.
Many taxpayers may receive an automatic assessment from SARS between July 7 and 20, 2026.
What does it mean when you are auto-assessed?
SARS will send you an SMS or email notification. Your tax return will already be pre-populated using information from employers, banks, medical aids, and other institutions. You should carefully review all information for accuracy. If everything is correct, no further action may be needed. If information is missing or incorrect, you must amend and submit your return manually.
