Capsules recovered at March and March protest were empty

Police say no arrests have been made in connection with the empty capsules recovered curing an anti-illegal immigration march.

THE police in Pinetown have said the capsules recovered from one of the buildings in the CBD during the March and March movement’s protest on Wednesday (May 20) were empty and “at this stage, “have not been confirmed as drugs”.

This as videos and images from one of the buildings where capsules were recovered have been widely circulated on social media, with speculative comments that these were drugs.

The communications officer at Pinetown SAPS, Jennifer Naidu, said approximately 1000 empty capsules were recovered during the demonstration.

“The capsules were reportedly thrown onto the street by protesters who entered the building situated at the corner of Park Lane and Crompton Street.

“At this stage, the recovered capsules have not been confirmed as drugs,” said Naidu.

Naidu said a 43-year-old was arrested at the scene for failing to produce documentation permitting them to be in South Africa legally.

However, the person, identified as a Nigerian national, was later released after they produced the required documents at the police station in Pinetown, added Naidu.

“No further arrests were effected in relation to the recovered capsules,” said Naidu.
