Extortion allegations against Metro cops to be investigated further
The NPA says there was insufficient evidence to enrol the matter, which now has to be investigated further by the SAPS.
THE National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed that the matter against the four Durban Metro Police officers accused of extortion was not enrolled at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court last Friday (June 19) due to “insufficient evidence”.
The spokesperson of the NPA in KZN, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, said this decision followed “a perusal of the docket”, which has since been “returned to the SAPS for further investigations”.
The four officers were due to appear at the court following their arrest for allegedly extorting a businessman in the KwaSanti area.
Durban Metro Police Service (DMPS) spokesperson, Colonel Boysie Zungu, had confirmed that the incident allegedly occurred on Monday, June 15, and that investigations led to the arrest of the four officers.
