One killed, 14 injured in Pinetown vehicle and taxi crash

One person was killed and about 14 taxi passengers were injured in a head-on collision on the M19 in Pinetown on Sunday night.

ONE person died, while approximately 14 others in a taxi were injured in a crash in the Pinetown area on Sunday evening.

According Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics, the head-on crash was attended to by emergency services just after 21.20 on Sunday on the M19 between Bevis Road and Otto Volek Road in the Pinetown area.

“Paramedics found that a fully loaded taxi had collided head-on with a light motor vehicle. Immediately more ambulances as well as Advanced Life Support Paramedics as well as the eThekweni Fire Department were dispatched to assist with the multiple casualty scene.

“Paramedics triaged the scene and found that the light motor vehicle driver, a male believed to be in his forties, had sustained fatal injuries and unfortunately there was nothing paramedics could do for him and he was declared deceased on the scene.

Paramedics said one man in a light motor vehicle was declared deceased after the car collided with a fully loaded taxi.

“Approximately 14 people from the taxi had sustained various injuries ranging from moderate to serious and once stabilised on the scene they were all transported to various Durban hospitals for the further care that they required.

“At this stage, it is believed one of the vehicles crossed the centre median, resulting in this crash, however, SAPS were in attendance and will be investigating further,” said Jamieson.
