Palmiet Nature Reserve celebrates 20 years of conservation and community

The Palmiet Nature Reserve Open Day highlighted the reserve’s role as an important natural asset in the Highway area.

MORE than 200 visitors gathered at the Palmiet Nature Reserve to celebrate its 20th anniversary recently.

The Open Day event brought together families, conservationists, environmental organisations and community members for a day of education, hands-on activities and outdoor fun.

Throughout the day, visitors participated in a diverse programme of interactive activities. These included rock painting with Hazel, drawing sessions with conservation practitioners, plant propagation demonstrations by the Natural Resources Division of eThekwini Municipality, a mock beach dig with Jean Senogles, a snake awareness presentation by renowned conservationist Nick Evans, an indigenous and alien plant identification session with Gail and Patty, outdoor sports and development activities, bug hotel building with Kat, and an entertaining puppet show presented by uShaka Sea World.

The event showcased the work of several organisations committed to environmental education and conservation. Exhibitors included Friends of the Palmiet, the Natural Resources Division of eThekwini Municiplaity, DUCT, Bats KZN, uShaka Sea World, Westville Conservancy, Westville Cubs and Scouts, Nu Eco, Bergtheil Museum, and the Natural Science Museum.

Visitors had the opportunity to engage directly with exhibitors, learn about local biodiversity, discover practical ways to care for the environment and gain a greater appreciation for the unique ecosystems found within the reserve.

Organisers said the 20th anniversary celebration recognised two decades of protecting the Palmiet Nature Reserve and the commitment of the volunteers, conservation organisations, community partners and supporters who have helped preserve this valuable green space for future generations.

“We are thankful to all the all exhibitors, presenters, volunteers and members of the public for contributing to the success of the event and reaffirmed their commitment to continuing environmental education, conservation and community involvement for many years to come.”
