POLICE in KwaNdengezi have confirmed that a 19-year-old learner was shot and killed at a local school on Monday morning (September 14).

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the police have opened a case of murder following the shooting, where the victim was declared dead at the scene.  

“It is alleged that the victim and the suspect were seen entering the school premises together when the suspect shot the victim several times, and the victim was declared dead at the scene. The suspect, who was wearing the same school uniform, fled the scene. The motive for the killing remains under investigation,” said Netshiunda.

KZN MEC for Education, Sipho Hlomuka, has condemned the shooting at Ndengezi Intermediate School.

Hlomuka expressed his “deep shock and sadness” following the fatal shooting of a Grade 10 learner at the school, which falls under the department’s Pinetown District.

“The district management and the SAPS were immediately called to the school and attended to the scene.

“The forensic services also arrived to attend to the scene and remove the deceased,” said Hlomuka.

He added that the incident “was deeply disturbing, particularly as schools are expected to be safe spaces where learners can learn, develop, and pursue their aspirations without fear”.

“The loss of a learner is always devastating, but for such a tragedy to occur within the school environment is particularly distressing. I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of this young learner. My heartfelt condolences go to the learner’s family, friends, fellow learners, educators, and the entire Ndengezi Intermediate School community during this extremely difficult time,” said Hlomuka.

He said the department will work closely with the SAPS and other relevant authorities as investigations continue.

“I urge everyone to allow law enforcement officials to conduct their investigation without interference. I also appeal to members of the community to refrain from spreading unverified information, particularly on social media, as this can cause further pain and distress to the bereaved family and the school community.

“As the Department, we will continue to provide the necessary support to the affected school community and work with all relevant stakeholders to promote safety in our schools,” said Hlomuka.
