A DOG which literally found itself in a tight spot when its head got stuck inside a discarded tyre is safe and receiving veterinary care at the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

The dog suffered scrapes and irritation around his neck from trying to escape.

Kloof SPCA’s Brigitte Ferguson said their Inspectorate Department received a call last Monday from concerned members of the public in the Westmead area.

“The members reported that they could hear a dog crying in distress somewhere in the bushes but could not see him. We were informed that the cries sounded desperate, and feared he might be trapped or injured.”

The SPCA field officers Eric Simamane and Philani Nzama were immediately dispatched. When they arrived, they could hear the frightened dog, but finding him proved challenging.

“They searched through bushes, drove around the open field, and followed the sound from every possible angle. Eventually, they found him. A little black dog, desperately struggling. Somehow, he had managed to get his head stuck in a discarded tyre,” said Ferguson.

To free him, Nzama and Simamane first secured him to ensure he could not bolt once released, then carefully worked to remove the tyre.

Ferguson extended her gratitude to the people who refused to ignore the cries of an animal in distress.

“And, of course, a massive thank you to our Inspectorate heroes, Eric and Philani, who refused to give up until they found him. The dog will remain safely in the care of the Kloof & Highway SPCA while we monitor his recovery and ensure he is fully okay.”
