Woza Moya supports local artist
Donald Songore's work is featured for the month of September on the Woza Moya Artists’ Wall.
DONALD Songore is a Woza Moya Artist of the Month whose journey into art began quite unexpectedly.
Born in Zimbabwe in 1993, Songore grew up with his parents, brother and sister. After losing his father at 14, life became difficult for the family, and he began working from a young age to help support his mother and siblings.
“At 16, he came to South Africa looking for work. After working several different jobs, his path into art began while he was supplying paper to schools. He noticed children working on school projects and one day offered to help a learner with a project. Donald spent the night making an animal for the learner, and the response encouraged him to keep creating.

“Teachers soon began asking him to make pieces for them, and in 2014, Donald decided to leave his paper-supplying job and focus on his art,” said Woza Moya’s Paula Thomson.
Songore said art has helped support his whole family, including his mother.
For the Artist Wall this month, Songore has created a collection of wire-and-bead trees inspired by jacarandas in bloom. The delicate pink and purple beadwork forms the flowers and leaves, while twisted wire creates the branches, trunks and intricate roots.
“The idea for the trees came from my brother, which makes this collection a particularly meaningful one to me.”
The concept behind the Woza Moya Artists’ Wall and Artists’ Cards is to create and showcase artists’ work. Woza Moya is the economic empowerment project of the Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust and assists the artist by marketing their work for the month.
The Woza Moya Artists’ Wall thanked the 100% Foundation for coming on board with an ongoing sponsorship and making this monthly event possible.
