I HAVE always loved writing about wedding anniversaries. There is something special about meeting couples who have been married for 50, 60 or sometimes even 70 years. They give hope and it shows that love always wins in the end.

I particularly enjoy stories that are heartwarming and positive. They remind us that love, commitment, friendship and good communication can stand the test of time. These are the values that most couples always say have kept them together and in love.

Recently I wrote a story about Colleen and Rob Thatcher’s 50th wedding anniversary.

The couple first met as young students at Edgewood College of Teacher Education in the 1970s. Colleen was just 17, turning 18, while Rob was a year ahead of her. 

Colleen said it was Rob’s courtesy and his manners that stood out for her. 

After their first date, she was certain that she had found the man she would marry. They married in 1976, bought their first home in Sarnia in 1978, and still live at the same address.

What stood out about this story for me was that Colleen still has her wedding dress.

During our interview, Colleen slipped into the wedding dress she had made herself on her mother’s Bernina sewing machine. And after 50 years of marriage, it still fitted her perfectly.
She even found the original shoes she wore on her wedding day and they were still in good condition.

As a writer, I love stories that leave you with a smile and this was definitely one of those stories.
