Queensburgh resident raises ‘moo’la for cancer charity

Tatum Terblanche is again taking on this year’s aQuellé Midmar Mile and raising funds for the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa.

THERE are just under 170 days to go to next year’s aQuellé Midmar Mile but preparations for Queensburgh resident Tatum Terblanche have begun in earnest.

For the last four years, Terblanche has dedicated her mile to raising funds for the Childhood Cancer Foundation of SA (CHOC).

The 33-year-old, who is a member of the ‘fun’draising arm for CHOC, the Cows, has set a target of raising R10 000 for the foundation. CHOC provides free, comprehensive support to families of children with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders.

This will be Terblanche’s tenth year swimming the Midmar Mile and her third 8-Mile swim (complete eight crossings over three days) for the foundation.

“This year I only did the 1-Mile and I had a bit of FOMO (fear of missing out). CHOC has really become my purpose and it’s an organisation I will give my all to. I’ve already started a fundraising drive and I’m confident I’m going to reach my target.

“September is also a significant month because it’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to spotlight childhood cancer and honour young patients and survivors,” she said.

Terblanche, who has previously volunteered at the Inkhosi Albert Luthuli Hospital cancer wards, said, “I’ve been a CHOC Cow for eight years and I’m always amazed by the work they do. Having been into the cancer wards and seen first-hand the impact they have and the strength of those children battling cancer has given me purpose. It is an honour and privilege raising funds for them and I will continue to do this for as long as I can,” she said.

While she has been training throughout the year, Terblanche will now be looking at upping her mileage in the pool.

“I recently got back into it the last few months. Typically in the winter I’ll do 1km per swim (20 laps of a 50m pool) and 2km over summer. My drive is the children and families CHOC help. They have 13 houses across the province, situated near specialised treatment centres, allowing families to stay close to their children during treatment. They keep me motivated to keep going,” she said.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
