Editor – We often hear people condemn, criticise and complain about our country, the government, politicians, civil servants and so on, but do they do anything about it, other than moan about it at braais, dinners, work or any social gathering? I am tired of listening to the same old story and prefer to look at the good there is in the world and try to make a difference.
I recently went to the Hillcrest Police Station to help someone report a case of theft. What a nightmare, to say the least. We were both subjected to some rude, uninterested, loud and disrespectful constables.
I am not a person who will not compliment or complain should the need arise, so I contacted Colonel TP Mbele on Monday, 19 January to report the treatment we had received. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how well-spoken, professional, understanding and efficient she was. She listened to my story and said she would get someone to contact me with a case number, and this happened about five minutes later. Colonel Mbele said she would only be in the office on Wednesday, 21 January, but asked me to please take the time to lodge a complaint, agreeing to receive it by email, which I did.
On Tuesday evening I received a phone call from her asking me if one of her staff had contacted me with the case number. This showed me I was dealing with a person who was committed to her job.
She phoned me again to say that she had received my email and that she would like to meet with me to discuss my complaint.
We met at my home and she informed me about the steps that had been taken as a result of my complaint and I was satisfied with what had been done. I have faith in Colonel Mbele and those like her.
My question is, will you just continue to bemoan the situation or will you stand up and do something about it?
