I am the chairman of Multiple Sclerosis South Africa KZN and was interviewed for East Coast Radio’s Big Walk on Saturday, 20 May to raise awareness for MS.
My husband, Colin, and I were set to do the Big Walk. Colin has had this disease for 38 years and is now wheelchair-bound.
After much preparation, and the Super Sport camera man telling us he would track us during the walk, we were victim to the after effects of rock throwing on the N2 just before the Tollgate Bridge.
While aiming for the off-ramp to Berea Road, I suddenly saw some huge rocks in the left hand lane.
I swerved to avoid the ones on the right, only to hit a large, very sharp one on the left. It ripped through two tyres as well as damaging my rims beyond repair.
We had to wait to be flat-bed towed to a garage where they helped us home.
This all took a few hours and we missed our early start and had to forfeit the walk – missing out on valuable awareness for MS.
We were offered an early start from Warwick Anderson, by the walk co-ordinator, as MS patients cannot function in the heat.
Some wonderful people stopped to offer assistance but because it was two wheels, we were stuck.
Just five minutes after we hit the rocks, another car fell victim.
