How to calculate SASSA old age grant

The maximum income per annum for a single person is R73,800 and for a married couple it is R147,600.

I REFER to the article published in last week’s edition on page two regarding the Waterfall couple’s failed attempt to get a SASSA old age grant.

My wife and I are both recipients of this grant and I give below the means test criteria to qualify, which incidentally, changes from time to time.

The maximum income per annum for a single person is R73,800 and for a married couple it is R147,600.

The total assets for a single person is R1,056,000 and for a married couple it is R2,112,000.

However, if you live in your own house, the value of the house is not included in the total assets calculation, but must be provided for record purposes only.

I hope this information will be of help to people making application at a SASSA office.
