Inanda Road a danger zone

Letter to the Editor - week ending 28 May 2021.

HILLCREST’S Inanda Road is fast becoming a death-trap as many motorists disregard the 60kph speed limit and blatantly speed through red robots.

Not only do they speed along the section of the road leading from Hillcrest to Waterfall, which has effectively become a race track, but motorists also drive recklessly, mounting the pedestrian pavements and damaging guard rails. Evidence of this can clearly be seen at the Rail Bridge after the intersection of Mill Road and Inanda Road, where the bridge itself is covered in scuff marks from vehicles that have mounted the pavement.

The situation along Inanda Road has become so bad due to the lack of visible policing, speed trapping and robot cameras. A pedestrian was killed by a speeding vehicle that mounted the pavement and knocked her over.

In the previous week there were at least two other accidents along this road.

Apart from being a death trap, Inanda road has also effectively become a race track. Certain motorists speed their way from Hillcrest to Waterfall. Many speed through red robots in the knowledge that there is no control in the form of either speed or robot cameras. Evidence of damage to pavement guard rails and skid marks can be seen in other areas of Inanda road.

Should the Department of Transport and the police continue to not take preventative action to stop the speeding and negligent driving, more deaths and accidents are likely.
