THE first major event hosted by the newly formed Golden Oldies Senior Citizens Club of Queensburgh was filled with excitement as members gathered at the Escombe Football Club on Wednesday, July 15, to participate in a variety of fun activities.

Although the Golden Oldies Club is less than a year old, it has already grown to a membership of 44 senior citizens.

Interim chairperson Priscilla Govender said that a Sports Day is a popular annual event for senior citizens’ clubs, and the Golden Oldies decided to organise one for its members.

On the day, members were divided into three teams, Green, Yellow and Red, and everyone received a prize for taking part.

Participants enjoyed a range of friendly competitions, including relay races, the egg-and-spoon race, the sari race and the beanbag toss.

Govender said the club was established to bring together retired people and other senior citizens who may be experiencing loneliness.

“Many of our members have families living abroad, while others have relatives who live far away. The club gives them an opportunity to socialise, make new friends and stay active,” she said.

The club meets once a week at Christ Church Queensburgh, where members participate in activities such as chair yoga, meditation and fun quizzes.

Govender also thanked Rakesh Sathis and the Escombe Football Club for making their facilities available for the Sports Day, helping to make the event a memorable success for all who attended.
