Club sets goal for women’s rugby team

Any ladies interested in playing rugby are encouraged to join the new HVJR club's ladies teams.

HILLCREST Villagers Rugby club is calling all young women interested in joining an Upper Highway women’s rugby team.

Billy Theunissen, Hillcrest Villagers Junior Club Rugby Chairman and qualified Bok Smart Rugby Coach and his assistant forwards coach Johan De Bruyn are very keen to develop a strong representing side in the 2014 Womans Rugby League and to develop players for the Womans Sharks team. Ideally they would like enough players to field 2 to 3 teams.

Theunissen has been involved with coaching development rugby in Hillcrest for the past 15 years and has served as HVJR chairman for two years.

“During my coaching experience I have come to understand the youngsters and have learnt that often the young girls playing have more passion and desire to play the game and to freely give their time to develop their skills, ” said Theunissen.

Since the campaign started in Hillcrest about a month ago, they have had 17 ladies sign up.

They are also keen to recruit a fitness coach, assistant backline and forwards coaches. All coaches and managers are on a volunteer basis.

“We as a coaching and management team are calling on all the interested ladies and community members and businesses to please support us in our endeavour and sponsor us with the necessary funding and services such as the medical and pharmacies for medical support and strapping, to enable us to grow this format of the sport to its rightful place in Hillcrest.”
